Western Michigan hockey is 60 minutes away from a national championship.
Appearing in their first-ever Frozen Four, the Broncos will face off Saturday night against Boston University in the NCAA title game at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis.
Coach Pat Ferschweiler’s team earned a spot in the matchup in thrilling fashion, knocking off reigning national champion Denver 3-2 in double overtime in the national semifinals Thursday. Western Michigan had squandered a 2-0 lead early in the third period, including the game-tying goal with 2:39 remaining in regulation. The Broncos rebounded, though, fighting evenly through a hard-fought first overtime before getting the game-winning goal from Northville native Owen Michaels just 26 seconds into the second overtime.
The win was Western Michigan’s second double-overtime victory in three NCAA Tournament games this season and it ended Denver’s hopes of a third national title in the past four seasons.
The final thing standing in the way of the Broncos and their first-ever NCAA championship is Boston University, which is appearing in its 25th Frozen Four and is one win away from its sixth national title. Though they don’t have quite as much talent as they did a year ago, when they had No. 1 overall NHL draft pick Macklin Celebrini, the Terriers have knocked off Ohio State, Cornell and Penn State to make it to the championship game for the first time since 2015.
