Renault confirms Twingo will launch as value EV in UK

Renault will re-launch the Twingo city car as an electric vehicle (EV) in the UK, with pricing set to start at around £17,000.

The Twingo will form part of a seven-model EV line-up from Renault and will serve as the entry point to the range.

When it goes on sale, the Twingo will rival the Citroen e-C3 and Dacia Spring.

Renault CEO Fabrice Cambolive, said: “I’m pleased to confirm Renault Twingo will launch in the UK.

“I put all my attention on the challenge to launch Twingo in right-hand drive, because I believe a car under 20,000 euro equivalent has huge potential in the UK as well as Europe, both for opening up the segment because of its design, technology and dynamics as with R5 and R4, but also because it brings a new level of versatility for the class that I believe customers will respond to.

“Accessibility to EVs is critical for the future, and Twingo offers something new for Renault, and for all car buyers.”

Efficiency of up to 6.2mi/kWh should provide an impressive range figure from a modest battery. Renault is yet to publish any technical specifications for the Twingo.

Development of the new model will be carried out by Ampere, Renault’s EV and Software spin-off.

Like the new Renault 4 and 5 models, the Twingo’s design is heavily inspired by the first generation model from 1992.

Beyond its own line-up, Ampere is also designed to be a technological, manufacturing and business platform serving brands other than Renault thanks to the flexibility of the manufacturing lines, the modularity of the two platforms and the competitiveness of the cost base.

Ampere will produce at least two models for Alpine and the next Micra for Nissan. Ampere will also support the Dacia electrification journey and will provide software solutions for the entire Renault Group.
