Girls' Basketball Coach Arrested After Allegedly Driving into Victim with Car Following Argument About Game

A girl’s youth basketball coach has been arrested after he allegedly drove into someone following an argument at a school in Connecticut.

Bryan Baez-Rivera allegedly drove his vehicle into an individual in the parking lot of Horace Porter School – where he had coached a girl’s basketball team during a game – after getting into a “verbal altercation” on Saturday, Jan. 11, Connecticut State Police stated in a news release.

Police responded to the scene at around 11:23 a.m. where they spoke with the victim. The victim reported they were “involved in a verbal altercation with the visiting team’s coach,” referring to Baez-Rivera, 29, following a girls’ basketball game earlier in the morning at the school.

The victim said they then “attempted to approach the coach’s vehicle in the parking lot, to which the coach intentionally ran into them, causing them to go over the roof and hood of the vehicle before falling onto the ground,” according to the release.

Police said the victim had “visible” but “non-life threatening injuries” upon arrival at the scene and was transported to a local hospital.

In security footage obtained by NBC News, a person is seen running towards Baez-Rivera’s white Sedan as he drives off from the parking lot at the school, before stepping into the middle of the road to face the oncoming vehicle.

The suspect doesn’t appear to slow down his vehicle and plows into the victim, causing them to flip over the hood of the car and fall to the ground, before the vehicle then continues driving.

Baez-Rivera later called the police and “reported his location” before waiting for them to arrive, per the release. He was arrested without incident and faces charges of two counts of risk of injury to a minor, breach of peace, assault and reckless endangerment.

The suspect reported of the incident that the victim “began chasing him on foot” and that “he was not able to avoid a collision.” He claimed that “multiple people then began to chase after his vehicle,” causing him to leave out of “concern for his own safety” and of the children passengers allegedly in the car with him at the time.
